April 2008

Dear Branch Member,

If you can manage an afternoon event, there are still a few places left on our branch visit to the Defence Academy in Shrivenham next week.

See below for what's involved.

This issue also contains details of our AGM in May and pointers to various other events which you may find interesting or relevant.

Thursday 24 April (afternoon): Branch visit to the Defence Academy, Shrivenham
visit to the Tank Shed at the Defence Academy (courtesy of Keith Diment)

This year's branch visit is a guided tour of some of the military hardware and technology on display at the Defence Academy in Shrivenham. The tour, which includes the Tank Shed and the Aviation Shed, has always been one of the highlights at the prizegiving for our Oxfordshire Schools Web Competition, so we are delighted that branch members will have a chance to see it for themselves.

Last few places: follow the link for more information and details of how to book.

Thursday 22 May: Education in the Internet Age and Branch AGM
AGM Agenda

After light refreshments and the formal business of the AGM, Mark Chamberlain, RM's learning platform business manager, will discuss the challenges for schools in the internet age to embrace IT and provide services to all involved: teachers, school staff, pupils and parents.

Can you help?

We always welcome new volunteers to our committee: would you like to join us?

The main task is to help with our meeting programme. You also have the chance to contribute to rewarding events such as the recent open evening and the web competition.

Even if you don't think you have time to join the committee, we welcome suggestions for meeting topics.

Use the feedback form to get in touch.

Thursday 5 June: Computer Whizz: The Best Is Yet to Come

If you know any children who are wondering whether to study Computer Science - or even if you don't - you should find this BCS-sponsored session at the Cheltenham Science Festival relevant as well as highly entertaining.

Dave Cliff is reprising the lecture he has been giving to rave reviews entitled The Best is Yet to Come, as part of the BCS series of 50th Anniversary events.

Tech Stuff

If you're technically inclined you may care to check out the next Oxford Geek Night on 22 April or BarCampOxford proposed for a weekend in May.
