SUMMARY:Exploring the World of Quantum Computing
DESCRIPTION:\nDaisy Shearer\, Quantum Computing Outreach and Education Lead
\, National Quantum Computing Centre\nIn this talk\, Daisy Shearer from th
e National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) will provide an overview of qua
ntum computing and how this emerging technology is expected to impact soci
ety. We will explore the quantum physics features that underpin quantum co
mputing\, the differences between classical and quantum computing\, how to
create a quantum bit and building quantum algorithms.\nAbout Daisy Sheare
r:\nDaisy Shearer is a passionate science communicator and educator with a
drive to make STEM more accessible and inclusive\, particularly for disab
led and neurodivergent people. With a background in experimental condensed
matter physics\, Daisy combines a deep technical knowledge of quantum tec
hnology with a passion for teaching and public engagement to translate qua
ntum computing concepts for a variety of audiences. At the NQCC\, Daisy le
ads strategy\, facilitation\, delivery and practitioner research on educat
ion\, outreach and public engagement to support the centre's work on the d
evelopment of the quantum workforce in the UK and improving public underst
anding of quantum computing topics.\nAbout the NQCC:\nThe NQCC is the UK's
national lab for quantum computing and a flagship programme of UK Researc
h and Innovation and an integral part of the UK National Quantum Technolog
ies Programme. The centre operates within a wider landscape for quantum
technologies development in the UK\, and works with partners across indus
try\, government and the research community to solve technology challen
ges and realise the benefits of quantum computers for social and economic
development.\n\nHybrid Meeting\n\nThis event will be held both “in per
son” and “via Zoom”.\n\n“In Person” Logistics\n\nThe “in perso
n” meeting will be held at our new meeting place: Rewley House\, 1 Welli
ngton Square\, Oxford OX1 2JA. The meeting will commence at 7:30pm\, and a
n assortment of light refreshments will be available beforehand. Once regi
stration is open\, please register for the event as usual using the Eventb
rite link on the website or via MeetUp\, where you will be able to indicat
e whether you are attending via Zoom or in person.\n\nCOVID-19\n\nBCS is f
ollowing government guidelines and we would ask attendees to continue to a
lso follow these guidelines. Please go to https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/co
 ronavirus-covid-19/ for more information\, advice\, and instructions.
