DESCRIPTION:\nJon Mcloone\nThis talk will tour the world of mathematical mo
 delling\, examining approaches\, potential and limitations. Using the high
 -level Wolfram Language to explore different approaches such as partial di
 fferential equations\, probability models\, stochastic models\, agent base
 d simulation and neural networks\, the talk will demonstrate live computat
 ions making predictions from computer vision to coastal waves. The talk wi
 ll further discuss some of the issues that the professional modeler must c
 onsider when using models to make decisions such as avoiding over-confiden
 ce or human-injected bias. The talk will focus on key concepts rather than
  technical details and should be accessible to anyone with a technical bac
 kground. The speaker has been involved in computational software at Wolfra
 m Research for over 30 years and is also the co-founder of ComputerBasedMa
 th.org\, a project to rethink maths education to assume that computers are
  the principle way that computations are performed.\n\nHybrid Meeting\n\nT
 his event will be held both “in person” and “via Zoom”.\n\n“In
  Person” Logistics\n\nThe “in person” meeting will be held at our ne
 w meeting place: Rewley House\, 1 Wellington Square\, Oxford OX1 2JA. The 
 meeting will commence at 7:30pm\, and an assortment of light refreshments
