SUMMARY:Mental Health and the Effects of Social Media
DESCRIPTION:\nLuisa Fassi\, MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit\, Univers
 ity of Cambridge\nMental health is affected by many different things\; is 
 social media one of them? In this talk\, I will discuss the extent to whic
 h existing research can (and cannot) inform us about the effect of social 
 media use on adolescents' mental health. Specifically\, I will cover how r
 esearchers 1) measure social media use\, 2) conceptualise mental health an
 d 3) establish cause and effect when studying the relationship between soc
 ial media use and mental health. Lastly\, I will address the way different
  patterns of social media use (e.g.\, scrolling through posts\, messaging 
 with friends\, posting) might be related to different mental health states
  (e.g.\, wellbeing and life satisfaction) and conditions (e.g.\, depressio
 n\, anxiety).\n\nBio\n\n[caption id="attachment_2862" align="alignleft" wi
 dth="112"] Luisa Fassi[/caption]\n\nI am MRC-DTP PhD researcher at the Uni
 versity of Cambridge\, where I work across the MRC Cognition and Brain Sci
 ences Unit and the Department of Psychiatry. My background is in Neuroscie
 nce and molecular Psychiatry. My current research focuses on mapping the r
 elationship between social media use and youth’s mental health. Specific
 ally\, I analyse data from large-scale national surveys to examine the lin
 k between social media use and mental health in adolescents affected by di
 fferent clinical conditions. Overall\, I aim to map the complex interplay 
 between digital technologies and youth’s mental health to inform clinica
 l research\, practice\, education\, and policy.
