DESCRIPTION:\nDr Guy Burroughes\, RACE\, UKAEA\nThis talk will focus on the
  issues and advancements in Remote Maintenance technologies in Challenging
  Environments\, based on work at the UK Atomic Energy Authority centre for
  remote applications in challenging environments. It will cover inter-oper
 able robotics\, control systems\, autonomy\, and machine learning applied 
 to challenging environments\, such as a fusion reactor.\n\nRACE is the UK 
 Atomic Energy Authority’s centre for Remote Applications in Challenging 
 Environments.\n\nWe make it possible to carry out tasks in hazardous and e
 xtreme environments.\n\nFor us a Challenging Environment is one in which p
 eople cannot work because conditions make it impossible or unacceptable.\n
 \nThese conditions are found in nuclear\, and petrochemical facilities\, s
 pace exploration\, construction and mining\, to name a few. The technical 
 challenges to overcome might include high radiation\, extreme temperatures
 \, limited access\, operation in vacuum and magnetic fields.\n\nWe use our
  unique skills in robotics and remote handling to develop solutions that w
 ork reliably\, safely\, cost effectively in the most extreme environments 
 imaginable.\n\nOur long-term goal is to design and operate plant and machi
 nery assuming zero manual intervention for long periods.\n\nWe call this
