Synopsis
The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) is Britain’s national museum of art and design. It covers 12 and a half acres and welcomes over two million personal, and 19 million virtual visitors annually. Business activities, in addition to being a major visitor attraction, include publishing, international touring exhibitions and loans, major refurbishment works, scientific research, and education.
In this session Sarah Winmill, Head of Information Systems Services, will present the challenges of supporting the activities and ambitions of this unique and varied organisation. You will be introduced to what goes on behind the scenes in the day-to-day working life of Museum staff, whether they be art handlers, conservators, or curators, and how that impacts their technology needs.
The visit will conclude with a walking tour, taking in highlights of the collections and a peep behind some of the doors marked ‘private.
Bio:
Sarah Winmill has been Head of Information Systems Services at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) since 2006. Sarah relishes working in unusual environments, providing unique challenges. She has previously enjoyed the special challenges of the Royal Academy of Arts, Historic Royal Palaces (including HM Tower of London and Hampton Court Palace), and the Royal Albert Hall.
Sarah’s passion is providing systems that are focused on the needs of the customer, rather than the latest technology fad. Her early career focused on ticket sales and retail systems before becoming fascinated by data networks and moving into infrastructure management.
Sarah is a member of the British Computer Society (BCS), the IEEE Computer and Communications Societies, and is a Chartered IT Professional. She is Chair of the Charities Consortium IT Directors Group (CCitDG), the premier membership group of IT Directors of major UK Charities, and serves on the committee of BCSWomen , the BCS Specialist Group providing virtual networking and support for women working and studying in IT. In 2008 she completed a MSc in Data Communications and was a Finalist in the Intel IT Leader of the Year, at the BCS IT Industry Awards
